J.M. Barrie’s The Little White Bird, or Adventures in Kensington Gardens, 1902
The First True Appearance of Peter Pan
In J. M. Barrie’s The Little White Bird, or Adventures in Kensington Gardens, we see the true first appearance of Peter Pan before the expanded Arthur Rackham’s illustrated edition of 1906, before the story of Peter and Wendy published in 1911.
The book cover is in lush pine-green, probably reflecting Barrie’s narrative of Victorian sentiment and obsession with childhood innocence and its “evergreen” spirit. This copy (18 x 15 cm) is in good condition, and the gilt, still bright. It has a bookplate on the front endpaper.
